Free, family friendly evening features jazz favorites

MELBOURNE, FL, May 24, 2011 - The sounds of American Jazz will fill the air on June 15 and 16 when the Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB) presents the first of its annual not-in-the-park picnic concert series. The main concert begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Melbourne Auditorium, 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for those who want to bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the sounds of “Art Martin and Friends.” Admission is free and no tickets are required.

Principal Conductor Staci Cleveland will lead the band as it explores some of the most popular American jazz tunes, including They Can’t Take That Away from Me, Sweet Georgia Brown, American in Paris and medleys of Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman compositions. Popular local vocalist Len Fallen will join the band to sing music by George Gershwin.

“Our picnic concerts are always so much fun and the band is very excited to present this wonderful program, which pays homage to some of the best-loved American jazz composers,” said Cleveland.

Instead of traditional concert seating, long tables will be set up to enable a ‘dinner and show’ experience and audience members can bring along their picnic dinners. Drinks, ice and snacks will be available for purchase at the Concession Table.

There is no charge for the concert and tickets are not required. Doors open at 5:30. Call 724-0555 or visit melbournemunicipalband.org for more information.

MELBOURNE, Florida, May 17, 2011 – The Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB), in conjunction with the Melbourne Police Athletic League (PAL) and 4 the Kids of Brevard, is holding its fourth Summer Youth Band Music Program from June 20 through July 14, 2011.

The free music instruction is open to all students enrolled in 6th through 9th grade who are interested in learning to play a musical instrument, or who already play a wind or percussion instrument.  The MMB/PAL is paying one month’s instrument rental fee and the cost of the lesson book for beginning students. Parents or guardians are responsible for the rental after the first month.

The program will run Monday through Thursday, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Church on the Rock, 4028 Babcock St., Melbourne (across the street from Palm Bay High School). Each student will receive a 50-minute group lesson with a qualified teacher and also will have playing time as part of a band.  Students will present a concert on the final day of the program, July 14th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Melbourne Civic Auditorium.

“This program has grown tremendously in the past three years, and we are very excited to be able to offer it to our area’s youth once again,” said Art Martin, MMB musician and Executive Administrator, and coordinator of the summer music program. “When young people learn to play an instrument, it’s an activity that they can enjoy their entire life and that can enrich their life forever.”

Additional information and registration forms for the summer program are available by contacting Mr. Martin by phone at 724-0555 or 956-2283, or via email at mmbpalsyb@gmail.com.  Parents and students also can visit the band’s web site at melbournemunicipalband.org and click on the link at the bottom of the home page to access additional information or an online registration form.
